Georgians across the state will celebrate the benefits of trees in honor of Georgia Arbor Day. Arbor Day is observed annually on the third Friday of the month, which in 2026 falls on February 20.
“Arbor Day is a time to recognize the important role trees play in Georgia’s communities,” said Johnny Sabo, State Forester for the Georgia Forestry Commission. “Our state’s forests are a major contributor to Georgia’s economy and provide thousands of products we depend on daily. Trees also improve air and water quality, support wildlife habitat, and enhance our quality of life.”
Communities across the state will host tree plantings and educational events throughout the month. At a state ceremony in Augusta on February 3, cities, campuses, and utilities participating in Tree City, Tree Campus, and Tree Line USA programs were honored for their commitment to sound tree care and long-term canopy stewardship. A Georgia Tree Council grant funded a special tree-planting at Fenton Street Cemetery, where damage repairs from Hurricane Helene are underway.
“Winter is actually the best time to plant trees in Georgia,” said Georgia Forestry Commission Community Forestry Coordinator Seth Hawkins. “Cooler temperatures and dormant trees allow roots to establish before spring growth begins, giving trees the best possible start.”
